From AmazonNimira is a music-hall performer forced to dance for pennies to an audience of leering drunks. When wealthy sorcerer Hollin Parry hires her to do a special act - singing accompaniment to an exquisite piano-playing automaton, Nimira believes it is the start of a new life. In Parry's world, however, buried secrets stir. Unsettling below-stairs rumours abound about ghosts, a mad woman roaming the halls, and of Parry's involvement in a gang of ruthless sorcerers who torture fairies for sport. When Nimira discovers the spirit of a dashing young fairy gentleman is trapped inside the automaton's stiff limbs, waiting for someone to break the curse and set him free, the two fall in love. But it is a love set against a dreadful race against time to save the entire fairy realm, which is in mortal peril.
I really can't explain exactly how this book was, there are just no words great enough to sum it up! I started to read and found I was hooked, finishing it all in one day. It was such a lovely, original story, I really wanted to keep on reading, and hopefully there will be a sequel soon!
Nimira is such an interesting character, working so hard, to prove to herself that she made a good choice leaving her parents and coming here, even though her job as a trouser girl isn't even all that fun, a huge contrast to what she was used to back home, in fact. Insert (wealthy) and handsome Hollin, a higher-class sorcerer who takes Nim into his grand home and treats her like the elegant lady she has always dreamed of being, if she is willing to learn songs and sing with his enchanted automaton, a life-size clockwork machine, of course.
Erris, an exquisite fairy, is trapped inside the life-size automaton fulfilled to play the piano for the rest of his life, but not if Nim can doing something about it. You can't help but feel so much sympathy for Erris, he is just such a sweet, gentle character; no wonder Nimira is slowly falling for him. But will her love be enough?
I can't even begin to describe how beautiful this story is; everything about it is just so magical. I loved the whole idea of the plot, so unique, and the writing - just breathtaking. It felt so easy to get lost in Jaclyn's words, which just goes to show how special this book is. Also, I liked the Jane-Eyrish atmosphere and similarities.
I adored how the book ended! A perfect finish to a magnificent novel; a house smothered with pure lies, sinister shadows, hiding a haunting past..
Magic Under Glass is a sophisticated, gothic fairytale that screams TRUE LOVE in every language possible!
